head torque and piston to head gap

I am starting to work on a metro diesel 6/1 that I bought a decade or more ago. I measured the piston/head gap and got .077/.079 in three places. When I tried to fire it of, I only got a puff of white smoke. I am think the gap is too large. When I torqued the head bolts , I only went to 55ft/lbs. It has a copper sandwich gasket I believe. Is 55 the correct torque ? Google tells me it is but some lean towards 110 or 150 !  I am wondering if the 55 is the reason for the huge gap or is it simply Indian QC. What should I set the gap to, 060 or 045-050as the book from Metro states ?

just one puff of smoke then nothing?
when you turn the flywheel slowly can you hear a creaking sort of sound from the injector? no creak likely means no fuel injecting.
im not the expert but that seems alot of gap for a 6/1.
dig around here for better specs and i think your torque is a little light.
