Specific questions... New to Lister AD1
« on: January 27, 2026, 10:11:48 PM »
Hi folks... New to this and not doing all that well so far!

I posted a broad question, in the wrong place I think ... https://listerengine.com/smf/index.php?topic=10085.0 , Asking about speed regulation.
I have now found some information but have specific question which I hope someone can help me with.

I have a lister Petter AD1 close coupled to, what I think is, a Markon generator. (I have attached a pic of the engine plate below...)

Specific questions...
From what I have found online and in manual snippets...

1.
I think I can use SAE 10-30 in the UK, is this correct? It will be likely easier to find, and cheaper, than the SAE 20 recommended by the previous owner.

2.
I think the speed, my unit is fixed, should be set to 4% above the rated speed, 3000 in this case, when offload and warm. This suggests that the unit will likely slow slightly under load, by 4% or less?
My unit runs at about 52Hz when offload and warmed up, which would be about right I think as that is 104%, give or take.
However when loaded to 3.5kW the speed/frequently falls to around 47.5 Hz which is only 95% of rated.
Worse still, it runs fast, with a corresponding high voltage, if the load is removed quickly reaching a little over 55 Hz and taking the best part of a minute or so to slow down again.

That is a 15% variation in speed, overall 95% to 110%, which seems excessive to me, and may actually cause me issues.
It seems to handle modest, and or, slow load changes reasonably well and starts easily even when very cold.
Other than being a little smoky it seems mostly OK, but I am wondering if a poor spray pattern may be responsible for the sluggish response and apparent overspeed when hot and coming off load.

I would very much appreciate your thoughts, in general, on speed regulation ?

3.
If the 15% or so is normal, can I use the Run / Stop control, by holding at some midpoint, to reduce speed when needed?
I note that there is a stop screw at the run end, suggesting that the position of the leaver can affect speed.
That said I also think that the max speed regulation is set with the adjustment to the left of the dipstick, is this correct?
I am a controls engineer so adding a stop solenoid and servo control to trim speed isn't something I would have an issue doing my question is will the pump handle that?
I am aware that a variable speed version exists but I do not know if the internals are similar or not!

Again your thoughts would be much appreciated?

3.1
Anyone know which shutdown solenoid will fit this engine? Pic below. I am assuming it will be sprung to stop and energised to run?
Anyone have an opinion as to weather I could use PWM, variable voltage essentially, to partially pull it for speed trim, assuming that is mechanically viabe?

4.
The 'Oil Filler'? cap, the thing with a T bar that compresses a rubber bung when tightened, is badly warn... Anybody know where I can find one or if any expanding cap that will plug the hole will do the job?

5.
Is there any down side to installing an oil pressure gauge and switch?
I believe there is a 1/8 BSP port near the pump/filter down on the left of the NDE, from which oil pressure can be obtained.
Given the, 'add a shutdown solenoid' plan, with or without speed trim, I would like a low oil pressure fail safe, and for that matter a low oil level fail safe if I can work out how to get a level switch in there! In the dipstick hole perhaps? anyone done that?

I am lead to believe that the oil pressure should be 2.4 Bar when hot, is this correct? and is it at all affected by age/hours and or oil spec?

6.
Lastly, for now...
I would like to add a longer, flexible at the engine at least, exhaust system to quiet the unit, route the exhaust away from the property and if at all possible, reclaim some of the waste heat.
I know even less about exhaust systems than I do about the engine in general and would appreciate an insights?
I do not anticipate finding / making a flange to attaché exhaust hose to the engine will be at all hard but I have no clue with respect to selecting a silencer that may help with noise and will not hurt the unit.
